South Africa is helping Liberia with its elections, the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) said on Monday.

The MDB met a 10-person delegation from Liberia on Monday, during a two-week study tour hosted by the Independent Elections Commission (IEC).

The Liberian delegation was impressed by the level of independence South Africa had afforded its municipal and ward boundary re-determination processes, said MDB chair Landiwe Mahlangu.

“The nature and running of MDB is regarded as one of the most exemplary internationally,” he said in a statement.

“For us, this speaks to the strength and correctness our Constitution affords our democracy and independent elections process.”

In its statement, the MDB quoted National Elections Commission of Liberia (NEC) executive director John Langley as saying the study tour was part of efforts to enhance and strengthen the commission’s capacity “as it strives towards enhancing the quality of services it delivers as it fulfils its constitutional responsibilities”.

He said the Liberian delegation had been lectured on the kinds of elections conducted in South Africa.

Mahlangu said: “We have success stories and lessons on elections and demarcation processes we should not be shy to share.”
