A large number of citizens in Gireida, South Darfur, gathered this morning (Monday) in front of the security forces office demanding the release of the imam of the town’s grand mosque.

Speaking to Radio Dabanga, one of the protesters reported that security forces at 8am today detained Sheikh Abdel Razeg Abdel Nur El Fada in his house in front of the mosque. He was taken to the security office of Gireida.

“The imam was detained because he had criticised the Zakat Chamber of South Darfur in his sermon last Friday. He had urged the Chamber to distribute the Islamic alms collected as stipulated in the holy Koran,” the source explained. “The word of God should be heeded when distributing the alms to people who are in real need. The Zakat Chamber should not violate the rules laid out in the holy Koran, the imam said.”
