Sierra Leone – Freetown mayor indicted
Makeni – Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday announced the indictment of the mayor of the capital Freetown and nine other top officials for corruption-related crimes.
Herbert Williams, mayor since 2007, was indicted on 25 counts including embezzlement and tax evasion, the ACC said.
ACC sources said the mayor owed some €150 000 of back taxes to the west African government.
The officials, arrested on Monday, were released on bail after surrendering their travel documents to the ACC. No trial date has been set.
