Somali American killed fighting in Syria
Abdirahman Muhumed was killed in Syria fighting alongside Islamic state of Iraq and Levant.
He is the second Somali American killed in the proxy war that has seen hundreds of young people from the west join the Islamic state ranks in Iraq and Syria.
29 years old father of nine is from Minnesota, the home of the largest Somali community in the United States which has been in the spot light of security agencies over the growing number of young American nationals travelling abroad to join the terrorist groups.
In a Facebook messages to Minneapolis Public Radio reporter, Muhumed wrote “I give up this worldly life for Allah” and “Allah loves those who fight for his cause.”
A picture posted on the social network also showed Muhumed carrying a Koran in one hand and a rifle in the other.
Abdi Bihi, the leader in the Twin Cities’ Somalia community, told KMSP that ISIS has recently begun trying to recruit young women from the Twin Cities to their cause.
“They are brainwashing them to marry them off to jihadists,” he said. “They call them to help out as nurses, help out the wounded but the real catch is they will be sexually exploited.”
Federal investigators believe that approximately 100 Americans have traveled to Syria to join Islamist groups.
