South Africa: Man kills 2, wounds wife in shooting spree
Bloemfontein – A 45-year-old man has shot his wife and four others in a Fochville bar before taking his own life, at the weekend.
Police spokesperson lieutenant colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said on Sunday that the man had shot himself at about 21:50 on Saturday at the Waterrite bar after shooting at his wife and the four other people.
Two of his victims have died.
The man and his wife were apparently getting divorced and were believed to have been in a fight earlier that evening.
Her husband later found her at the bar in School Street.
Ndou said the shooter had shot dead – for no reason – another man who came walking from the gym across the road, before storming into the bar.
“He found his wife inside and shot her in the left upper arm.”
An anonymous source told reporters that two men – the barman and a customer – had tried to stop the shooter when he turned in their direction and started shooting.
The barman was killed and the other man was shot in the throat.
The attacker then shot another man in the knee and thigh before walking out of the bar.
“The shooter put the pistol under his chin and pulled the trigger. He died instantly,” said Ndou.
The Fochville emergency services were called to the scene.
The attacker’s wife and the man who was shot in the leg, were taken to Leslie Williams hospital in Carletonville.
Both were able to go home after treatment.
The condition of Johan van Niekerk, 35, who was shot in the throat, was initially extremely critical.
He had to be taken by ambulance to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto as his condition was not stable enough for him to be flown in the helicopter which had been sent for.
A family member of Van Niekerk’s said on Sunday night that his condition was stable and that he was now out of danger.
He was apparently still being treated in the intensive care unit.
Fochville police were investigating three charges of attempted murder and two of murder.
The names of the deceased as well as the other injured, were not known by late on Sunday night.
