South Africa: Second teacher arrested for sex charge
A teacher at a Krugersdorp high school, west of Johannesburg, has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing school girls, the provincial education department said.
“The police approached us on Tuesday to confirm whether he was employed at the school, and we confirmed that he was and then they arrested him,” Gauteng education spokesman Charles Phahlane told Sapa.
“He appeared in court yesterday [Thursday].”
The teacher was released on R5000 bail.
He was arrested after school children laid charges with the police.
“The children went directly to the police,” said Phahlane.
This is the second arrest of a teacher on allegations of sexual assault in a week in Gauteng.
A Roosevelt High School, Johannesburg, teacher was arrested earlier this week on similar charges. His wife, who was a teacher at another school in the west of Johannesburg, committed suicide shortly after his arrest.
Phahlane said it was good that sexual abuse allegations in schools were being dealt with, but emphasised these were isolated incidents.
