Sports Minister thumbs up successful FA Cup final
The minister of Youth and Sports has ‘thumbed up’ the Normalisation Committee of the Gambia Football Federation for what he described as the successful organisation of the domestic FA Cup at the weekend.
Pa Omar Babu scored an 87th minute winner to secure Banjul United their first ever domestic cup triumph in just four years of existence, following a 1-0 defeat of Hawks in a game played at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
Speaking in an interview with Observer Sports on the sidelines of the final, Minister Jammeh said the organisation was very good, and thanked the main sponsor, West African Lotto. He also lauded the Committee for securing a sponsorship for the final within a short period. “I think for a very long time we [just] getting a sponsor for the FA Cup. We still do not have a sponsor for the league but I am hoping we will have a sponsor for the league because sponsorship is very critical for our various competitions,” he remarked.
Describing the final as ‘violence and tension-free’, Minister Jammeh was full of praises for both the title winners Banjul United and losers Hawks. “Generally, I think we could do better in terms of talents and skills. I am looking forward to really having some good football,” he said.
Quizzed by our reporter as to whether the better side won, Minister Jammeh opined that from the first half it was Hawks that was pushing hard, but added, “Banjul United was very disciplined in stopping them and they were very swift in their counter-attack, and that paid for them.”
According to him, the successful organisation of the final, which was not even part of the NC’s TOR, shows the importance of having right people in the right position, thus encouraging football stakeholders to put people who are professional and know the game to run the show.
Also speaking to Observer Sports was Mamadi Ceesay, founder and director of West African Lotto. He told Observer Sports that his company came to The Gambia with the aim to sponsor our football. According to him, his company is more than ready to support the development of Gambian football. “Right now, we are not getting any proposal but we are working with the GFF to help Gambian football,” he further told this reporter.
West Africa Lotto, Ceesay said is a lottery company founded in almost all over the world and is here in The Gambia to give the chance to be millionaires. “We have live draw on TV every week. We are located at Bertil Harding Highway just opposite Futurelec Building. We are currently employing 100 youths that have ambition to work with the company and we hope to increase the number of employees to 500 in few months to come.”
On his take on the game, the West African Lotto director expressed delight at watching the FA cup final, saying his favorite team (Banjul United) won in the end.
Ba S Jabbi, the chairman of the FA Cup final organising committee, said he was so happy seeing a successful final and thanked all those that attended the final. He also thanked West African Lotto for coming on board to sponsor the final.
