Take Advantage of Govt Health Facilities, NGO Urges Women
The Coordinator, Humanity Family Foundation for Peace and Development, Mrs. Kemi Adeyeye, has urged pregnant women and nursing mothers to take make use of the Federal Government-funded health facilities for maternal services.
Adeyeye made this plea during a workshop organised for women in the Onipanu and Somolu areas in Lagos.
The event, which had over 150 participants, was supported by the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (SURE-P MNCH), a project of the Federal Government.
She said, “Nigeria has the second highest number of pregnant women in the world; but unfortunately, we also have the third highest maternal deaths. This has happened largely due to lack of sensitisation.
“That is why we are partnering with SURE-P MNCH to bring enlightenment to women at the grassroots. They need to know what they stand to gain by patronising SURE-P health centres in their local government areas.”
Adeyeye said the benefits include free antenatal and postnatal services, immunisation and subsidised Caesarian Section in some referral general hospitals.
Others are a cash transfer of N5,000 to mothers who meet conditions such as attending at least four antenatal care visits and undergoing delivery by skilled birth attendants.
Representatives from the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Mosunmola Dada and Dr. Mazeedat Erinosho, also enlightened women on the need to cultivate proper health practices before and after childbirth.
