JOHANNESBURG – A three-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after being caught in the crossfire of a shooting in Westbury, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

Warrant officer Gordon Billing said he could not confirm whether it was a gang-related shooting.

“All we know is there was a shooting yesterday in Westbury at 1800 hours. One suspect has been arrested. He will face charges of attempted murder.”

A 24-year-old man was arrested for the shooting, which happened on the corner of Statler and Croesus streets, Billing said.

The boy was hit by a stray bullet while travelling in the area.

A 26-year-old man in a separate vehicle was also hit.

The two were taken to nearby hospitals for medical care.

The man was shot in his right arm and was treated and discharged, Billing said.

People who witnessed the shooting identified the 24-year-old man as having been involved and reported him to police.

No firearms were recovered.

“It is unclear (what) the motive of the shooting (was) or how many shots were fired,” Billing said.
