JOHANNESBURG – A circus worker was attacked by a tiger in Rietfontein, Johannesburg, on Sunday, paramedics said.

The tiger escaped from its enclosure early on Sunday morning. It is believed that the man had been feeding the animal when it pounced on him.

The tiger has since been put back into its cage.

The man sustained severe bite wounds and lacerations to his neck and chest, Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said in a statement.

Botha said paramedics managed to stabilise the man at the scene.

“He’s very fortunate to have survived such an attack.  He was then transported to a hospital in Johannesburg where he’s undergoing treatment,” said Botha.
