Shurugwi hails JR Goddard for road maintenance

Shurugwi – Engineering giant James Ross Goddard and local councilor (Cllr)Simon Kamurai have received affectionate pats at the back from villagers for spearheading a road-rehabilitation project worth $40 000 in the farming community areas of Shurugwi ZimEye has learnt.

The progressing resurfacing of about a 44km stretch from Mapongogwe to Dorset area via Kashambe resettlement area would be the fruit of the Samaritan gesture. The village dust roads had reached an advanced state of damage.

The ZimEye news crew interviewed, Cllr, Kamurai who was in ecstatic mood and he was quick to express warm gratitude towards JR Goddard Construction Company for the road revamping initiative which he described as first of its kind since Zimbabwe attained its independence 34 years ago.

‘’After elected into office as Ward 21 councilor, I teamed up with my development committee and approached Goddard requesting for the local road rehabilitation. Thank God, the gentleman agreed to assist us by providing his full road repairing equipment, free of charge for that matter.

‘’The white man has fulfilled his promises after community members contributed 2000 litres of fuel while the local authority Tongogara rural district council through the Community Share Ownership Trust(CSOT) contributed the greater part of the needed fuel. The road is now taking new shape. Since independence our roads was fast deteriorating but now that JR has extended his hand, development here is now blooming,’’ said the seemingly cheerful councilor.

Kamurai also stated that in his offer the white man also employed sixteen local villagers for the project.

The Zanu PF District Commissariat, Patrick Mbiba echoed similar sentiments describing the project as a stepping stone in the right direction, however calling upon the local legislator Tapiwanashe Matangaidze to take advantage thereby emulating what the white man has done to the community.

‘’The project is fast taking shape. We are happy that the local councilor had the guts to approach JR for the good of community development. We are very happy the entire community from, Zhauwe, Mavhumashava, Dorset and Kashambe have buried the hatchet and joined hands with steadfast unity of purpose to say in the project implementation.

’’ JR is man enough in terms of development, not only in our community but nationwide. I think he posed a challenge to the local Member of Parliament, Tapiwa Matangaidze. I urge the legislator to emulate the gesture by the white man,’’Mbiba said.

Despite recent threats by President Robert Mugabe that his government was going to take further steps in taking very little left white man pieces of land while addressing the gathering at the National Heroes Acre, scores of Shurugwi district leadership said James Ross Goddard should be spared from further property grab.

‘’On that aspect I should think the Government must consider JR and leave him to develop not only our district but Zimbabwe as a whole. One of the few whites remained in the country, Goddard has proven beyond doubt that he can take our country to greater heights in terms of development.’’ added a Zanu PF source who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Contacted for comments JR Goddard Construction Company’s Gweru Commercial Manager, David Steyn confirmed the company’s involvement in the community development initiative.

‘’Yes we are working hand in glove with Tongogara Rural District Council and the local Community Share Ownership Trust in a joint venture. We are doing road repairing and doing some of the drainage free of charge.

‘’It is our company’s social responsibility gesture where we plough back to communities. We believe a bigger part of our company’s labor force comes from this community, ‘said Steyn with a humanitarian twinkle in his eyes.

Goddard‘s commercial expert further elaborated that were targeting upgrading the road from Mapongogwe to Dorset and from Dorset to Kashambe. The CSOT and the community he said is providing fuel and the personnel for the project implementation.

The clear spoken JR official said they were expecting t to finish the road revamping in about ten days time.
