Woman arrested for circulating nude Zimbabwe President Mugabe photo
A Zimbabwean woman has landed herself in trouble after sharing a picture of the country’s President, Robert Mugabe on the social networking platform Whatsapp.
Bulawayo resident, Shantel Rusike was arrested after a friend reported her to the police for sending an image depicting President Mugabe in a nude state on Whatsapp.
According to the Zimbabwe Mail, Rusike sent the image to a colleague identified as Precious Tshuma on Christmas day. The picture was accompanied by the caption: “Robert Mugabe turning 87 years on 21 February, happy birthday Matibili operation.”
Tshuma then decided to report Rusike to the authorities leading to her arrest.
Shantel Rusike,20, is now facing charges of causing hatred, contempt or ridicule of the president as defined in Zimbabwe’s Criminal Law act.
She was released on US$100 bail and will be back in court on 11 January.
In a similar, Benias Madhakasi was arrested and jailed for about four months after being charged with possession of computer-generated caricature images of President Robert Mugabe.
Madhakasi, who was arrested in April, 2012, was freed in July after the High Court threw out all the charges he was facing.
