MASERU — Saturday night saw glitz and glamour at Maseru Sun where guests of the Elegant Dinner Ball were dressed to the nines.
The theme of the evening was Equality for women is progress for all: celebrate women’s day in true fashion and the event was graced by powerful women from different sections of society.
The place was decorated in black and white setting the tone for the black tie event.
Guests were treated to a red carpet treatment fit for stars with photographers snapping the celebrity moments.
With male ushers escorting female guests to their tables after offering them refreshments, the night lived up to the elegance.
Although there were predominantly female guests there were some male guests who attended to support the event.
The event started with the emcee, Refiloe Mohlotsane, reciting a poem titled “Women”, through which she painted a clear picture of why women should be honoured and respected for their hard work.
She praised women’s ability to give birth while focusing on climbing the leadership ladder and nurturing society.
“Our theme for the night Equality for women is progress for all is the same as what Basotho mean when they say, when you educate a women you are educating the whole community,” she said welcoming guest.
Present at the dinner ball was resident manager with Sun International Lesotho Cyril Francis who encouraged women to enjoy a sleepless night of fun as opposed to sleepless nights of nurturing their children.
“Tonight is a night where we are going to have lots of fun. We expect you to leave this place with an understanding of what it is like to be a woman where you have sleepless nights because of the kids, only this time you are up having fun,” he said.
Teasing the guests’ brains Francis asked what the word “woman” means before he gave his view referring to the creation of a woman in the book of Genesis in the bible.
“A woman was created from a man’s rib in his sleep and when he woke up to see a different creature he said, “Wow man” and that’s why women are important,” he said, adding women in society add the wow factor and there is no man who can deny that.
The event’s key speakers ‘Malichaba Lekhoaba, Tsepang Mosena and Kutloelo Molapo all emphasised on the importance of finding one’s focal point in life to succeed despite life’s challenges.
Palesa Motlomelo, who is a new mother, received a standing ovation when she sang her song Rise Women of Africa which in its lyrics encourages women to always look to God.
Lilaphalapha added the comic relief to the event while Kingdom Classics mesmerised female guests with love songs that made them feel special.
All female guests were then presented with a bottle of champagne as a token of appreciation.
The event, which was organised by Sun International Lesotho, saw the hotel giving out lunch, dinner and accommodation vouchers to women through a raffle competition.
