Wednesday 9 July 2014 – 11:10am
HONEYDEW – An army of Red Ants descended on the Mbhele Section of the Zandspruit informal settlement on Tuesday morning, evicting more than 60 families.
The Ants and members of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) carried out the eviction operation.
Reports of unrest were reported on Wednesday morning and police were keeping an eye on the settlement.
JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the demolitions were above board, as the houses had been built illegallly.
He claims eviction notices were handed out two weeks ago.
But community members dispute this.
